On shadow

in’ei means shade, or shadow. We took the name from a habit rather than a theory: on every site visit, the first thing we do is turn the lights off.

A room lit evenly from above has no hours. It reads the same at eight in the morning as it does at nine at night, and it asks nothing of you. A room with one window and a deep reveal is a different room every time you enter it.

We are not arguing for gloom. We are arguing for contrast — for a bright table and a dark corner in the same room, and for the understanding that a material only shows itself at the edge of the light.
